I think as a new mum there are difficult moments when it is easy to doubt yourself (and those pesky hormones don’t help). You’ve never done this before, you’re not getting much sleep, you’re completely inexperienced and it’s a very steep learning curve! No one comes into this knowing all the answers (no matter how many books you’ve read) and we’re all just trying our best.
Worse still, there’s a very real possibility of post partum anxiety or post partum depression sneaking up on you – and suddenly you feel completely overwhelmed. You might have noticed that I’ve been a little absent lately. Between working my full time job, commuting, looking after Alfie and trying to write – it all got too much! So I gave myself a little grace, and this seems like the perfect blog to come back with.
I found it really helpful to take a deep breath most mornings (when I got 5 seconds to myself) and go over a few positive affirmations. These little words seem so simple but it can really have a beneficial effect on your mindset!
Here are my positive affirmations for new mums:

Choose from this selection of mama-mantras (you only need to do a couple – so pick which ones best apply to you that day) and stop for just a couple of minutes to remind yourself of what a good job you’re doing. Stop focusing on the negatives and replace defeatist thoughts with a few positive words.
Positive affirmations are a fantastic way to help boost your confidence when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed. They can help you overcome your fears and develop a happier mindset. They are simply positive statements to help redirect your thoughts and emotions to a more positive place so that you feel more confident and secure.
Using affirmations on a regular basis is a powerful tool for change, helping you remove negative or limiting beliefs by re-programming your subconscious mind. Your words are powerful!
Try using them by:
- Repeating them often. (Using your affirmations regularly will embed them into your subconscious mind.)
- Saying them passionately and with conviction.
- Believe in your affirmation as you say it and anticipate the success.
I’ve kept each of my positive affirmations for new mums short and sweet – most are just a single line.

Let me know what you like to tell yourself every time you feel moments of self-doubt creeping in. Maybe you want to create your own positive affirmations more suited and relevant to your situation.
