Trying to come up with new and nutritious meal ideas that your baby/toddler will eat is one of life’s great challenges. We went the baby-led weaning route with Alfie (once he met all the signs of readiness), which means that we skipped all purees and baby cereal and went straight to solid food at seven months (six months adjusted). This means that for six months now we have been trying to come up with new and exciting ways to get him to eat a nutritionally balanced diet and not live on Cheerios (which would be his preference!)
These microwave Oatie Bites have fast become a breakfast favourite thanks to the fact that they are so quick and simple – and versatile in that you can really use whatever fruit (dried or fresh) that you have to hand. Microwave Oatie Bites are essentially the same as making a bowl of oatmeal, but easy to pick up for tiny hands and virtually mess-free… They also keep well in the fridge for up to a week, so I can make a batch and then pull them out whenever we need. They are always gobbled up hungrily by Alfie thanks to the natural sweetness from the fruit and the tasty peanut butter.
A huge hit all round!

To Make The Microwave Oatie Bites
- 3 Tbsp Quick Oats
- 3 Tbsp Milk (or plant-based alternative – we use Oat milk or Coconut milk)
- 1/2 Banana
- 1 Tbsp Peanut Butter (or preferred nut butter)
- 5 dates (finely chopped) or other fresh or dried fruit
- Mash banana and peanut butter together on a microwaveable plate (we use a side plate with a raised edge)
- Add the chopped dates, the oats and the milk
- Mix well and smooth out the mixture across the plate
- Microwave for 2-3 minutes or until a thin crust forms on the mixture
- Remove and score the mixture into bite size pieces.
- Allow the mix to cool and harden, then pick out the pieces and give to your hungry toddler

We serve our Oatie Bites alongside a portion of cereal, some fresh fruit or occasionally some scrambled egg. They are usually one of the first things that Alfie reaches for and he always finishes them!
